Mt. Gox has postponed creditor payouts for another year

Mt. Gox has pushed back the deadline for repaying creditors by another year, to 31 October 2027, after receiving court permission granting creditors additional time to complete the procedures required to receive their funds.

According to a notice dated 16 October issued by rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, the deadline was moved from 31 October 2026, as many creditors had not yet received their payouts due to incomplete procedures or problems that arose during the distribution of funds.

The bankruptcy trustee stated that the base payments, early lump-sum payments, and intermediate payments have largely been completed for creditors who provided the required information, with no issues having arisen.

However, a significant number of creditors are still not receiving payments, including those who completed the necessary steps but encountered problems during processing.

The court-approved extension gives the rehabilitation trustee another 12 months to continue payouts, provided that repayment remains practically feasible.

Mt. Gox loan repayment deadline moved to October 2027

Under the revised schedule, the new loan repayment deadline in Japan Standard Time is 31 October 2027.

The notice did not introduce a new category of repayment, nor did it announce any changes to the amounts creditors are entitled to. The focus remained on outstanding payments within the existing restructuring procedure.

Kobayashi explained that some creditors had not completed the procedures required to receive funds, while others had encountered difficulties in the repayment process.

The bankruptcy trustee characterized completing repayments to these creditors as desirable to the extent that it is reasonably practicable.

Mt. Gox distributes funds under a restructuring procedure that allows creditors meeting the established criteria to receive payments under various repayment schemes.

The base repayment amount is part of the rehabilitation program, while the early lump-sum repayment and intermediate repayment are separate schemes available under the plan.

The October announcement did not provide updated figures on the number of unpaid creditors, nor did it specify the amount of bitcoin and other assets to be distributed.

The document did not set out a schedule of individual payouts within the new deadline.

Creditors wishing to obtain information about their claims were advised to use the online rehabilitation claim filing system, where they can submit inquiries through the frequently asked questions section.

The bankruptcy trustee stated that creditors may use a separate inquiry form without logging in, although in such cases identity verification may prove difficult.

Due to the large volume of inquiries, the rehabilitation team warned that responses to creditors' requests may be delayed.

Mt. Gox creditors have repeatedly faced delays in loan repayments

Mt. Gox has postponed the repayment deadline several times since the original target set for October 2023, as the rehabilitation process dragged on and was not completed within the previously set timeframes.

In October 2025, the trustee again postponed creditor payouts, moving the deadline from 31 October 2025 to 31 October 2026.

As previously reported, the 2025 announcement stated that approximately 19 500 creditors had received payments, while others were left without payouts due to incomplete procedures or processing difficulties.

A similar postponement of repayment deadlines occurred in October 2024, when the trustee moved the completion date from October 2024 to October 2025.

The repeated delays followed Mt. Gox's collapse in 2014, when the Tokyo-based exchange filed for bankruptcy after losing approximately 850 000 BTC.

At its peak, Mt. Gox handled roughly 70% of global bitcoin trading volume before withdrawal problems and a shortage of funds forced the platform to shut down.

Subsequently, the exchange began a civil rehabilitation procedure, under which creditors sought compensation for assets that had been inaccessible for many years.

The rehabilitation process approved by the Japanese court ultimately made it possible to begin distributing funds, including payouts in bitcoin and bitcoin cash.

Repayment began in July 2024 through specially selected cryptocurrency exchanges, including Kraken and Bitstamp.

On 16 July 2024, Kraken confirmed receiving funds from creditors after Mt. Gox transferred significant amounts of bitcoin to addresses associated with its distribution agreements.

The exchange subsequently began crediting the funds to the relevant users, ending a wait of more than a decade for some claimants.

During the fund distribution process, Mt. Gox transferred money to several custodians, including BitGo, which received bitcoin under the repayment agreement.

Bitcoin remains under the control of the rehabilitation trustee

Despite the distributions made earlier, Mt. Gox continued to hold significant bitcoin reserves in 2026.

According to blockchain data cited by Arkham Intelligence, on 2 June the exchange transferred 10 422 BTC worth approximately $739 million.

As part of the transaction, 10 306 BTC were moved from cold storage to an unspecified address, with the purpose of the transfer remaining unclear at the time.

As of the June report, Mt. Gox held more than 34 500 BTC, and the rehabilitation process was continuing in line with the previously set deadline of October 2026.

The June figures are historical and do not reflect the trustee's remaining bitcoin holdings as of October 2026.

The 16 October announcement did not report a new wallet balance, did not confirm further bitcoin transfers, and did not name an exchange that was to receive another distribution.

Creditors may continue to submit repayment-related inquiries through the debt restructuring claim review system, although the trustee warned that the volume of requests may affect response times.
