ENS requests approval from DAO for a protocol upgrade

The Ethereum naming service (ENS) is asking its decentralized autonomous organization ENS DAO for permission to activate the upgraded naming protocol on the Ethereum mainnet.

ENS founder Nick Johnson has submitted a draft executable document to activate ENSv2, the next version of the protocol. If approved, the upgrade will freeze new registrations with the original ENS registrar, while existing domain owners will be able to continue renewing their names.

As a result of the upgrade, a redesigned registry architecture will be introduced with more flexible domain and access rights management. After activation, ENS Labs plans to transfer the remaining administrative control over the upgraded contracts to the DAO.

New .eth domain registrations will be migrated to the upgraded system after domain records are synchronized. Johnson warned that for several hours during the transition, new registrations will be temporarily unavailable in both versions.

According to the proposal, existing domain owners are not required to switch to the new domains, and their names will continue to function as usual. ENS Labs has also reserved existing .eth domains for their current owners in the upgraded system, allowing users to move to the new domains whenever they are ready.

The activation proposal is still at the draft stage and must pass a vote within the DAO on the blockchain before it is implemented.

Under the ENS governance rules, implementing proposals requires participation from at least 1% of voters, which amounts to 1 million ENS votes, as well as majority approval during a seven-day voting period. If approved, the upgrade will be subject to a timelock of at least two days before implementation begins. The voting date has not yet been announced.
