The first atomic transaction between Ethereum and L2 has been executed

In Ethereum, an atomic transaction was executed linking the main network with a layer-two network (Layer 2) within the framework of the Ethereum Economic Zone concept. During the test, 0.001 ETH was transferred, and state changes on both execution layers were coordinated.

EEZ project participant Eduardo Antuña Díez stated on 5 October that this transaction represents the first atomic execution of L1-to-L2 operations on the Ethereum mainnet. Transaction logs analyzed in subsequent reports show a cross-network call transferring 0.001 ETH along with a state update.

The test provides the project with its first example of synchronous composability on the mainnet. Put simply, actions involving Ethereum and the EEZ rollup can be combined in such a way that either all of them succeed or all of them fail, instead of one side of a multi-step transaction being completed while the other is not.

The EEZ test in Ethereum combines L1 and L2 transactions into a single operation

The Ethereum Economic Zone is designed so that a smart contract in a connected rollup can call a contract on the Ethereum mainnet, receive the result, and continue using it within the same transaction. The project’s official description states that a similar structure is intended to support calls between EEZ rollups.

At present, Ethereum bundles typically operate in separate execution environments. Users moving assets or interacting with applications across different networks often depend on bridge transactions, separate liquidity pools, and asynchronous messaging between networks.

In EEZ, this process changes by coordinating operations around Ethereum’s native block production. ETH remains the settlement asset and source of truth, while connected rollups are intended to use Ethereum’s contracts and liquidity without requiring the user to first carry out a separate bridge step.

The latest mainnet test used only 0.001 ETH, so it should be viewed as a technical demonstration rather than proof of the system’s readiness for large-scale financial activity.

Antuña characterized the transaction as proof that atomic synchronous composability has moved beyond theory. His statement concerned the implementation in the exclusive economic zone specifically and should not be taken as a claim that no other blockchain project has previously demonstrated atomic cross-network execution.

Atomic execution could eliminate separate bridge steps

The core EEZ protocol works by coordinating L1-level transactions with a dedicated L2-level block and submitting the linked operations so that they land in an Ethereum block simultaneously. If the required conditions are not met, the coordinated execution can be reverted.

The project’s official materials describe an approach in which applications can access contracts and liquidity across various participating environments without having to maintain separate deployments and integrations for each network. Users will be able to interact with L1-level and L2-level applications by means of a single transaction, if the entire architecture works as planned.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst and Zisk founder Jordi Baylina presented the Ethereum Economic Zone in March with financial support from the Ethereum Foundation. Gnosis and Zisk are founding partners, and an EEZ Association is being established in Switzerland to develop this infrastructure as open source.
